The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is Sony’s third home console, following the huge success of the PS2. It was first released on November 11, 2006 in Japan, and shortly after in North America and Europe. The PS3 remained active from 2006 to 2017 about 11 years of production.
The PS3 was a big step forward in gaming technology:
- High-Definition Graphics: It supported full HD games and Blu-ray movies, making games look sharper and more detailed than ever before.
- Blu-ray Disc: Like the PS2 had DVDs, the PS3 used Blu-ray discs, which could hold much more data, allowing bigger and more complex games.
- Online Gaming: Sony introduced the PlayStation Network (PSN), allowing players to download games, play online, and even stream movies.
- Powerful Hardware: The PS3 used a new processor called the Cell chip, making it one of the most advanced consoles at the time but also harder for developers to work with at first.
- Free Online Play: Unlike other consoles at the time, playing online on the PS3 was free.
Some of the biggest game series that grew on PS3 include Uncharted, The Last of Us, LittleBigPlanet, and Demon’s Souls. The PS3 also had a lot of indie games through the PlayStation Store.
The PS3 had a slow start because of its high price, but over time, it became very successful. Sony officially ended PS3 production in May 2017 in Japan, and shortly after in other regions.
Today, the PS3 is remembered for its bold technology, amazing exclusives, and for setting the stage for online console gaming.
