Playstation 4

The PlayStation 4 (PS4) is Sony’s fourth home console and one of its most successful. It was officially released on November 15, 2013 in North America, followed shortly by launches in Europe, Japan, and other parts of the world. The PS4 remained active from 2013 to 2023, with production ending after a full decade.

After the challenges with the PS3’s complex design, Sony made the PS4 simpler for developers and more powerful for players:

  • Stronger Hardware: The PS4 was built with a design closer to a regular PC, making it easier for game studios to create amazing games with stunning graphics.
  • Social Features: The PS4 added features like Share buttons for easy screenshots and video clips, and built-in streaming to Twitch and YouTube.
  • Great Exclusives: The PS4 became home to some of Sony’s best games ever, like God of War (2018), Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Bloodborne.
  • PlayStation Plus: Online play continued to grow, with PS Plus offering free games every month and big multiplayer communities.
  • VR Support: Sony introduced PlayStation VR in 2016, bringing virtual reality gaming to a home console audience.

The PS4 sold over 117 million units, becoming one of the best-selling consoles in history. Even after the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, Sony continued supporting the PS4 for a few more years.

Sony officially stopped producing PS4 consoles in 2023, although millions of players still enjoy PS4 games today.

The PS4 is remembered for its powerful library, great performance, and for making gaming more social and connected than ever before.
